About Australian Self Defence

Background

Australian Self Defence (ASD) commenced operating in Canberra 2003 teaching adult and children's Hapkido self defence programs. Originally operating in Downer and then in 2008 moving to Mitchell ACT.  ASD is a Martial Arts Centre of Excellence and over the past 12 years has broaden the martial arts they offer to students to include Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) a ground based self defence system, Floro Fighting Systems (FFS) focussed on edged and blunt weapons awareness, specialised self defence courses for children (Action Kids), teens (Urban Survival), adults (Ladies Self Defence and FAST Defence) and tailored training for various organisations. ASD also has a positive interest in developing combatively fit individuals and classes focus on fitness using martial drills to achieve these fitness goals. ASD has built a culture of respect, nurturing and progressive learning across a wide array of martial disciplines. Students are exposed to and can focus on various martial arts gaining the benfits of each martial art and develop an all round appreciation of martial arts ultimately becoming a more complete martial artist.

ASD is a member of the Australian Jujitsu Federation which is a Government recognised martial arts peak body. ASD follows their code of practice and governing rules. ASD is officially approved as a centre for the teaching and practice of Korean Martial Arts as authorised by Han Min Jok Hapkido Association and World KIDO Federation. ASD has strong links with various Hapkido Masters including Master Fari Salievski (Hapkido 7th degree Black Belt) of KMA.  ASD is also an official Brazilian Jiujitsu Will-Machado School under Professor John Will (BJJ 5th Degree Black Belt), and is an official Floro Fighting System school under Mr Ray Floro.

Mission

Our mission is to facilitate positive change and self development in our student’s lives; to help them be the best that they can be.
Martial arts are unique in their ability to address the improvement of our physical, mental and spiritual being. We strive to provide a superior self defence program and school that produces upstanding and contributing community members who value their bodies, minds and spirits and encourage others to do the same.

Creed

  1. I intend to develop myself in a positive manner and avoid anything that would impair my mental growth or physical health.
  2. I intend to develop self -discipline in order to bring out the best in myself and others.
  3. I intend to use the skills I learn in class constructively and defensively to help myself and my fellow man, and never be abusive or offensive.

The ultimate aim of martial arts study is not victory or defeat but in the perfection of the characters of its participants.

What you get from us

ASD Academy is the premier martial arts school in Canberra . Our courses and curriculum are second to none. We provide you with courses, instructors and the tools to improve yourself, physically and mentally. Physically, the self defence foundation of the course is pre-eminent, practical and useful. Mentally, the personal safety and life principles programs provide you with valuable life skills.

Children will improve their behaviour at home and learn how to focus and concentrate at school better. They will develop better social skills and learn how to keep safe through our ASD Life Principles and ASD Personal Safety Program.

Teens will be provided with clean living healthy role models. They gain successful mentors, learn life skills and strategies to help them make the right choices in today’s complex world. Teens learn ways to walk away when possible but protect themselves when needed.

Adults will find a personal haven, where they can concentrate on themselves for a time each day. Young adults will find the physical rush of endorphins a pull while older adults will enjoy a stronger body and feel healthier. Adults will have a focus and clarity of vision that will help them to succeed in other areas of life.

Sounds too pie in the sky? Not really. Think about it. If you were to add into your day a bit of exercise, proper breathing, success in learning something useful and new, some time just for you with instructors and training partners who want you to succeed – then you know that you would feel better about yourself straight away. Combine that with quality supporting curricula, facilities and literature, then you know it is achievable.
